Managing Partner referral

Hi all, I recently had a managing partner put in a referral for me at one of the big four as I apply for a consulting position. He told me his referral alone would guarantee me a first round interview, but I am a little skeptical. My GPA is quite low compared to the average hire by the firm, and I am worried that when I apply through Handshake and the company's website my resume will just get tossed aside because of the GPA. While I have very good experience, I don't know if the company's scanners will throw my resume out once it sees the GPA. Is this a valid concern, or does his referral get me past those scanners? Thanks yall!

If the managing partner puts a referral in for you then your GUARANTEED an interview. No HR person is going to think that they know more than the managing partner just because of a low GPA. They will have a note that the managing partner pushed you.

So an MD who works at the firm you applied to told you that you are guaranteed a first round interview. This person knows you (I’m assuming), knows the company, and knows how the recruiting process works.

You then decide to post on a message board to get anonymous replies to see if what the MD is saying is true. So you are getting advice from people who don’t know you, don’t know the company, and don’t know the recruiting process. How do you think this is going to help?

I understand the anxiety around getting a job and being in your shoes, I was there. But step back, think logically and apply some common sense.

Take a breath. I can feel your anxiety through my laptop. If the managing partner said you're going to get a first-round interview, then I'm pretty sure you're going to get a first-round interview. He would have no reason to lie to a college kid about something so trivial.

Btw, it 100% gets you past the corporate scanners. Start focusing on what you can control and crush your interview(s). Good luck!
