MBB Case prep

Hello everyone, if you only had 3 weeks to prepare the cases for Bain, how would you proceed? Any tips? Taking into account I'll be working 5 days a week, so I won't be full time practicing the cases and I never did any of them

Start with LOMS to get the idea of how a case actually works. Once you understand the "flow" take a couple notes on the basic frameworks you will use for the majority of the cases (profitability, market-entry, new product etc.). After you have the basics just try to do as many live cases with someone as possible. Live cases have the highest ROI and considering you don't have a lot of time I would try to get around ~15 in before your interviews. Really focus on improving a specific part of your case each time you do one - could be your introduction/hypothesis or making a customized framework for the case or having good calculations. Ask for feedback from the person you are doing it with to try and guide your practice for what you need to focus on.

Hey toubu54 a recent post came up also asking about Case Prep. So I'll repurpose the content since it's just as relevant.

In case interviews, this is the general resources list that is widely used:

  • CraftingCases (free) - has articles + free 7 day crash course - personal favourite of mine since it dives into case components, has self-study drills and walkthrough examples
  • PrepLounge (free) - has a market for matching individuals case prepping with one another - it's a hit or miss where you sometimes find some incredible people globally and many students casing for the first time
  • RocketBlocks (free trial) - offers 7 day free trial and has (in my opinion) the most helpful consulting drills to practice mental math, case structuring, data extrapolation and some other stuff
  • Victor Cheng's Looking Over My Shoulder (paid) - a paid case interview walkthrough where you hear an interviewee deliver a case and the narrator highlights why the execution was good, this is *invaluable* after you've done ~5-10 cases and become conscious of the case cues to hit
  • Case in Point (free) - offers a *foundational* understanding of the case interview process along with some basic/rudimentary frameworks - this gives you a bit of insight into the high-level areas to brainstorm around and some common questions, but keep in mind that frameworks need to be customized for the case
  • Case Interview Secrets (free) - offers a more in-depth look into the consulting mindset and how to structure frameworks from scratch - I'd argue this is more applicable to on-the-job thinking, but I've seen it work really well (and I've referenced it myself)
  • University Case Books (free) offers more cases than anyone could possibly cover in a lifetime; you can find them by simply googling a university + Case Book and a year. "Darden 2013 Case Book" for instance.

Now, given that you are working 5 days a week, I'll provide my proposed breakdown with that in consideration.

  • For the first 7 days:
    • CraftingCases Module (Weekday) - 1-2 hours focusing on the Drills and Walkthroughs
    • RocketBlocks Practice (Weekday) - 0.5-1 hour focusing on Mental Math
    • Mock Cases (Weekend) - 30-45 mins/ea [either through friends, PrepLounge or another service] - aim for about 3-4 each day on the Weekend
  • For the next 2 weeks:
    • Mock Cases (Weekday) - 30-45 mins/ea [either through friends, PrepLounge or another service] - aim for about 1-2 every other day
    • After about 10-15 Cases, take time to reflect on Case Cues and listen/read to LOMS for 1-2 hours
      • Be hyper critical of the next few cases and focus on weaker aspects
        • i.e. if you're poor at calculations, execute those especially well in a quantitative case; if you're bad at verbalization, re-do a case you solved and focus purely on verbalizing the structure and heightening the delivery; if you're bad at brainstorming/coming up with ideas, take on a purely brainstorming oriented case
    • Final note is to remember that the cases will tend to lean towards the interviewer's exposure; Bain is known for their PE Pipeline, so it wouldn't be shocking if you received a restructuring or M&A case.

There's no one size fits all for casing and the breakdown above is assuming (1) you have a few hours in the evening and (2) you have no prior consulting exposure. Over time, candidates move on from reading frameworks/concepts to simply doing x number of cases a week. Those that pass MBB do anywhere from 10-50 cases, of course, there are exceptions with some people that are naturally skilled in casing, not me of course - I did 40-50 myself.
