MBB London Consultant new to Credit Cards

Hey Monkeys, just joined MBB in London and am new to the credit card system. Company offers and corporate Amex Gold, but I see other people use their personal credit cards such as the Mariott Bonvoy, or the British Airways one.

Unsure whats best for me, or if cards all have strong use cases that simply depend on one’s lifestyle (+/- travel ; +/- dining ; etc.)

Looking for any tips or resources for me to make research! Thanks in advance :)

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some tips and resources for researching the best credit card options for your needs:

  1. Understand Your Spending Habits:

    • Evaluate your lifestyle and spending patterns. Do you travel frequently? Do you dine out often? Your spending habits will help determine which card offers the best rewards for you.
  2. Corporate vs. Personal Cards:

    • Corporate Amex Gold: Typically offers benefits like travel insurance, purchase protection, and rewards points that can be redeemed for travel, dining, and more.
    • Personal Cards: Cards like the Marriott Bonvoy or British Airways can offer specific travel-related perks, such as hotel stays or airline miles, which might be more beneficial if you travel frequently for personal reasons.
  3. Research Resources:

    • WSO Forums: Engage with the community on Wall Street Oasis to get personalized advice and read about others' experiences with different credit cards.
    • Credit Card Comparison Websites: Use sites like NerdWallet or The Points Guy to compare the benefits, fees, and rewards of various credit cards.
  4. Consider the Fees:

    • Be aware of annual fees and foreign transaction fees, especially if you travel internationally.
  5. Maximize Rewards:

    • Look for sign-up bonuses and ongoing rewards that align with your spending habits. Some cards offer higher rewards for specific categories like travel, dining, or groceries.
  6. Additional Perks:

    • Some cards offer additional perks such as lounge access, travel insurance, and concierge services. Evaluate these benefits to see if they add value to your lifestyle.

For more detailed discussions and advice, you can check out the relevant threads on Wall Street Oasis, such as the one titled "Anyone Churn Credit Cards?" which might provide insights into the best strategies for maximizing credit card rewards.

Remember, the best card for you will depend on your individual needs and spending habits.

You'll be better off asking someone in your office or on Fishbowl (there's a bowl for Londoners in Consulting), as they'll have better insight about the offering from banks in the UK (since most people here are US based)

I was in London at Bain, but I didn't bother with anything other than our corporate AMEX. I know some people took a private AMEX, but that's the extent of my knowledge

I did both

In PEG there is typically no travel. Only exception is if you're staffed on a DD with another European office. Then you might travel there for a week to colocate (or they might come, depends where the center of gravity is)

In GP, I've seen a bit of everything. My personal experience is I travelled once for 3 days to colocate in 2 years. But I know people who did weekly travel across the UK, or regular travel to other European offices if you were staffed on a case out of Paris/DACH/Madrid/etc.

The balance fluctuates month to month, and haven't seen enough regularity to call out a trend
