McKinsey Soph summer- Apply Now or Later?

Hey everyone. I have a question regarding a sophomore summer internship by Mckinsey. For context Im at an Ivy with 3.5 GPA. One of the qualifications needed is leadership in extracurriculars. While I have these from an internship at a bank and big 4, in my extracurriculars in college i only am treasurer of one club and thats it. The deadline to apply is in early Nov. Is there a benefit if I apply now or should I wait to improve my school involvement by fall and apply then? Thanks!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know:

  • Leadership and Extracurriculars: McKinsey values leadership experience, and while you have some from your internship at a bank and Big 4, your current role as treasurer of one club might not be as strong as you'd like.
  • Application Timing: McKinsey has indicated that they prefer candidates to bring their "whole and best self" to the interview process. This suggests that they value well-rounded applications that showcase your full potential.

Given this, it might be beneficial to:

  1. Enhance Your Extracurriculars: Use the early part of the fall semester to get more involved in school activities and take on additional leadership roles if possible. This can strengthen your application significantly.
  2. Apply Closer to the Deadline: By waiting until closer to the November deadline, you can update your resume with any new leadership roles or extracurricular activities you take on in the fall.

This approach allows you to present a more robust application, potentially increasing your chances of success.

To my knowledge, McK reviews all applications at once, so there is no advantage to applying early. Whether you submit your application on the first day or the day before the deadline, the timing won't affect when your application is reviewed.

I would recommend waiting until you have more leadership experience on or off campus and have built more connections within the firm, as these factors will strengthen your application.

Hope this helps. Good luck, and I hope you get it!
