Moving as a senior from KPMG to PWC

Hi everyone,

I am currently a newly promoted senior in KPMG and have been with the firm for 2 years. I have expressed my intention to move into transaction svcs this year and spoken to people, however all that has been futile. My mid-term goal would be to become a manager and then do an mba in 3-4 years time.

I dont mind staying in audit for a few more years, however, i dont really enjoy the current industry im auditing in KPMG. I audit clients in the electronics industry and there isn't much leeway for me to move out. My managers are reluctant to transfer me to other units and i'm quite frustrated with the rigidness. I recently interviewed w PwC and I was offered a position as a senior in audit. During my interview at PwC, the partner told me that staff get to audit various industries and its alot more mobile. I feel like accepting their offering and tendering my notice however I'm not sure if its really worth making the move. The big thing stopping me is the fact that my current manager is really nice and helpful. As long as i dont screw things up, i shld be able to be promoted without much issues.

Is it worth making the move given my mid-term goal? I'm not an exceptional performer at present and not very close to my managers.

Thanks in advance for your advice!

Well you have to think about it this way... You have a network where you are currently, have a manager that is willing to be a sponsor to you when it comes time for promotions. Are you really ready to lose that and go somewhere you have to have your work speak for itself and also have to rebuild a network you spent two years building?

Plenty of people find themselves in your situation, and plenty of people make the move. You'll build a new network at PwC, and having the old one from KPMG will be a huge asset down the road. As those folks leave for industry, you'll have contacts from both KPMG and PwC that will later help you build / sell new business.

On that note, you'd want to be a little more careful at the Manager / Senior Manager level because of sales targets, and your lack of an internal network could hinder you there, but as a Senior I you are at the perfect place in your career to make a move. I would say PwC is viewed more favorably than KPMG anyway in regards to exit ops, TAS or otherwise. I say make the move.

Hi all,

Thanks alot for your replies. I'm not troubled over losing the network that I have built at KP because at the end of the day, i still cant move out of my industry and my managers arent doing enough to help me with that. The daunting part is starting afresh vs having a great mgr who will help me during promotions, but it's alittle exciting at the same time, just have to get over the inertia.

trazer985, will pm you!

I went through something similar. My perception is that situations like this are becoming more and more common as the Big 4 deal with the fact that they've been working their employees to death for the past 2-3 years without compensating them or giving them any opportunities. At least, I'm guess you, like myself a couple months ago, feel that way.

I don't want to make a decision for you. I agree with Angelus that you don't want to undervalue your network. Remember what it was like starting at KPMG? It will be just like that at PwC. The other thing I would consider is that the guy at PwC who said you would have more mobility is recruiting you. Think back to when you interviewed with KPMG and think about what they told you that ended up being true and what didn't. Good luck man, congrats on the offer!
