Penn student - testing consulting waters

I'm a Wharton junior. Also taking a 2nd degree in a "hard" subject - think math or physics - in the college. I have a 3.6. How competitive would I be for MBB (specifically, would the rigor of second degree be taken into account when looking at GPA)? First time I am considering doing consulting...

What are your major GPAs? Extracurriculars?

Some firms will place more emphasis on your GPA while others will value extracurricular activities, but even those are just firm-specific stereotypes. Each firm places more emphasis on one or the other, but both factors will be weighed in its decision to grant interviews.

Majors don't matter. MBB offerees at my school this fall were people of many majors, but generally accomplished people on campus - either by GPA or extracurriculars. GPA-wise, they were all within the same range (usually 3.7+, but one of the MBBs had a markedly higher "cutoff" than the others at my school and did not seem to deviate at all from it). Extracurricular-wise, the offerees all did different things but stood out in their own ways. So think about whether your extracurriculars can "compensate" for a slightly lower (but still very good!) GPA.

After going through fall OCR, I've realized that there's really no formula to predict what will happen during resume drop. One's best bet is to have strong GPA and strong extracurricular involvement - but even that can't guarantee someone an interview, so remember to network! Think of it as an opportunity to learn more about consulting, because that will be valuable knowledge considering your relatively recent interest (which isn't a disadvantage at all - I only started thinking about it junior year also). Alums from your school will be able to give you the best advice about how to best position yourself for the future and OCR.
