Recruiting for MBB + T2 US offices from LBS/INSEAD

Many previous threads had touched the subject, but I was hoping to get advice/comments specific to my situation. I would greatly appreciate any thoughts, suggestion, feedback, recommendation, comments!!

I am an American with engineering background, 7 years in oil&gas engineering firm in Houston as an engineer with project management responsibilities, matriculating in a top European MBA this summer, think LBS/INSEAD. I wanted to do a US FTMBA, but I was only able to get into Stern; decided to do a European MBA for few different factors. I'm sure US recruiting would've been easier at Stern, but that's another subject and it's in the past already. I understand that my interview and case performance will be more important than anything, but I do not want to create unneccessary hurdle in an already uphill battle.

I will start networking and put in some leg work prior to moving to Europe here in the stateside and will get more info once I am at school, but I wanted a wider perspective from WSO to set my expectations/goals going in. With that said, I have following questions.

  1. It would be much more natural to recruit for London office. But from the fact I would try to return to US after a year, I think it would make sense to try to start at a US office if I can. I am not sure how brexit affects visa situation too. Does it make sense to apply for US offices?

  2. MBB does global recruiting so I know I can apply to US office directly, but what about other T2 firms like AT Kearney, OW, LEK, etc? Is OW even possible without finance background, not much info available since OW recently started MBA recruiting.

  3. If I shoot for US offices, should I apply for Houston offices to increase my chances? I really hated Houston and I am afraid that I would be stuck doing O&G projects (reason for consulting is to get exposure to different industries) and unable to transfer to a different office later. I am willing to try Dallas and would most prefer west coast offices LA/SF. I stayed 7 yrs in O&G because I got to do some interesting stuff, but would like to move on.

Thanks so much for the help!

  1. It does make sense to apply to the US. Being a US national you won't have the issues Europeans when applying for US positions - widen the net
  2. Yes, Tier 2 firms (the ones mentioned) do global recruiting. OW is possible without a finance background but a steep hill to climb. You're better off applying to others and frankly since you want exposure to more industries applying to OW (which is mainly FIG) isn't the best plan.
  3. Yes, applying to Houston may increase your chances. I know you want to move away form O&G but 7 years of experience will make you seem like an expert to many so moving away from it means backtracking position-wise. If at any point you decide to not hate O&G and want to explore than industry in other parts of Europe, I suggest looking at the Nordics.
