Should I not ask for extra time?

I’ve been offered to request reasonable adjustments for an OA. I’ve done this however many times before but I always worry it’ll quietly undermine me.

Thoughts on whether I should actually disclose? Especially anyone who’s ever been on the recruiting/HR side

Based on the most helpful WSO content, the decision to disclose and request reasonable adjustments depends on your specific circumstances and the potential impact on your application. Here are some key considerations:

  1. Disclosing for Adjustments: If you genuinely need the extra time to perform at your best, requesting reasonable adjustments is your right and can help level the playing field. Many firms, especially in finance, are increasingly aware of the importance of diversity and inclusion, and providing accommodations is part of that effort.

  2. Concerns About Stigma: While there is always a concern about potential bias, the WSO threads suggest that not disclosing could lead to confusion or frustration later if you need support. For example, one thread mentions that disclosing upfront can ensure you receive the immediate support and understanding you deserve, rather than facing challenges down the line.

  3. Recruiting/HR Perspective: Some firms actively target neurodiverse candidates or those requiring accommodations to broaden their talent pool. However, there may still be hurdles at the start, as noted in discussions about stigma in early stages of recruitment. If you feel the firm is genuinely committed to diversity, disclosing might even work in your favor.

  4. Balancing Risks and Benefits: If the adjustment (e.g., extra time) is critical for you to perform well, it’s worth requesting. However, if you feel confident you can perform without it, you might choose not to disclose to avoid any potential bias.

Ultimately, the decision should align with your comfort level and the specific needs of the situation. If you do disclose, ensure you frame it positively, emphasizing that the adjustment allows you to showcase your full potential.
