Should I rerecruit, and where?

Was fortunate to land an ACN Strat offer in a major city but have heard mixed things about the firm, and the practice. Was curious if it would be worth it to rerecruit (In terms of setting myself up for VC or an MBA). If so, what firms would better set me up for those goals?

If you're considering re-recruiting to better position yourself for VC or an MBA, here's what you should know based on the most helpful WSO content:

  1. ACN Strategy's Reputation: While ACN Strategy has made significant strides in bolstering its strategy capabilities through acquisitions and poaching talent from top firms, it is still not considered on par with MBB (McKinsey, BCG, Bain) in terms of prestige. For VC or top MBA programs, MBB firms are generally viewed as stronger launchpads due to their brand recognition, alumni networks, and the rigorous experience they provide.

  2. Re-recruiting Considerations:

    • Timing: If you’re early in your career, re-recruiting now could make sense. However, if you’ve already started at ACN Strategy, you may want to gain some experience there before making a move.
    • Networking: Extensive networking is critical for re-recruiting into MBB or other top-tier firms. Use your current position to build connections and demonstrate your value.
    • On-Campus Recruitment: If you’re still in school or recently graduated, on-campus recruitment can be a great way to target MBB or other top firms.
  3. Firms to Target for VC or MBA Goals:

    • MBB (McKinsey, BCG, Bain): These firms are the gold standard for setting up a career in VC or gaining admission to top MBA programs. Their brand carries significant weight, and their alumni networks are highly influential.
    • Boutique Strategy Firms: Firms like LEK, Oliver Wyman, or Roland Berger can also provide strong experience and connections, though they may not carry the same prestige as MBB.
    • Specialized Firms: If you’re targeting VC, consider firms with strong ties to tech or innovation, such as those with a focus on digital strategy or product management.
  4. Alternative Pathways:

    • If re-recruiting into MBB or similar firms isn’t feasible, focus on excelling at ACN Strategy. Build a strong track record, seek out high-impact projects, and leverage the firm’s resources to network with VCs or MBA alumni.
    • Consider off-campus opportunities and networking to pivot into VC or prepare for an MBA without needing to re-recruit.

Ultimately, the decision to re-recruit depends on your current position, long-term goals, and the effort you’re willing to invest in the process. If you’re confident in your ability to network and secure a better offer, it may be worth pursuing. Otherwise, focus on maximizing your current role and building a strong foundation for your next steps.
