Should I try for MBB with a 3.5?
Hi all, I'm going to be a senior a semi target university (CMU) but my gpa is only 3.5. Should I try for MBB at all by networking to get an interview or just aim for Tier 2 firms?
Thanks!!

3.5 is fine (usually some leeway for engineering, not sure how that would work with CMU though tbh), network away. You shouldn't drop connecting with Tier 2's that come to OCR though if you find their specializations interesting.
Definitely try for both MBB & Tier 2. Like yogurt said above, there is wiggle room with engineering and CMU is well regarded for its engineering programs (assuming you are in engineering).
If you have other experiences that you can bring to the table, like consulting clubs & engineering clubs, the 3.5 is not that big of a deal.
Does a 3.5 in engineering cut it for MBB? (Originally Posted: 04/25/2013)

what school?
3.45 or 3.54?
HYPS yes. Target/semi target ??
Oh, hells. What are MIT and Caltech - chopped liver?
I have no clue about Caltech MBB placement. I am aware the GPA scale at MIT is different so I believe he may need a higher GPA at MIT for MBB.
3.54-its not a target though BCG last year had a 3.5 threshold for our on-campus recruiting interviews
So... BCG had a 3.5 minimum for your OCR interviews last year... You have a 3.54 GPA... 3.54 > 3.5... Is there a trick question in here somewhere that I'm missing? You are above the threshold, so you check the box. The question is what do you do outside of class that'll differentiate you from the rest of your class.
3.5 in engineering = if (olympian || crazy research || crazy experience || daddy is a big client etc.) then have a shot else Deloitte(JK)
>3.5 in engineering = kosher
>3.8 in engineering = probably help you
>3.9 in engineering = pretty damn impressive
*assuming you go to a target/semi-target. Basically unless if you have something really crazy going for you, the lower your GPA goes below 3.5, the more it hurts your chances (rate > 1)
Is there a significant difference between pay between engineering consulting, financial consulting, business consulting? Or is there not really much of a distinction when it comes to consulting firms?
