Sports Projects

I wanted to see if anyone out there working for MBB/Tier 2 firms has worked on any solid sports related projects. Any major leagues, teams, school organizations, or media companies. I'm trying to get a better understand for what firms do the most work with those types of clients. Thanks!

I can help with part of your question by providing a brief description of projects that I know MBB firms worked on. Most of these I learned about talking to consultants during OCR. Unfortunately, I can't reveal which firm did which project, but my impression is that these are niche/one-off projects that are very cool by don't come around all that often. Olympic bids (Chicago, Salt Lake, SF) - From what I gather, it's not unusual for MBB to work on these. Work often includes developing framework for what components of the bid will be critical, identifying areas of competitive advantage, running those analyses, and orchestrating the process. I'm not clear on whether firms stay involved to help with the PMO. Note that 2/3 cities I mentioned had unsuccessful bids. SEC expansion - Go/no-go (key driver: average incremental profit for current schools). Which teams? When? Cricket - IMO, the coolest sports project I've heard of. One of MBB helped create and stand up a pro cricket league in India including normal market-entry criteria but also revisions to the game itself to make it more palatable to a TV audience (domestically and abroad). Rumors - I've heard than one of the MBB has also been engaged to look at implications of shortening the season for one of the major US leagues.

Paraag Marathe (current President of the 49ers) got his start with the team when he was at Bain and they were brought in to do a project to value draft picks...AKA the coolest consulting project ever.

They exist, although they are definitely few and far between. Have had similar anecdotes as BRJ through the recruiting process. I would certainly not go into consulting expecting a steady dose of sports projects, but you would have a chance if you were there. McKinsey definitely seems to do the most, at least from what I've heard. Another project linked below.
