Student Government and MBB
Out of curiosity, how do places like MBB look at leaders in student government? I know that often, especially for the small, competitive summer internship programs, the GPA bar is pretty high, but would solid leadership experience of that sort help?
Let's assume here a GPA that's not really bad... just not hot stuff. This is for undergraduate recruitment from a top-notch US university (HYPSW, etc.).

Student government = any other leadership role in student organization
There's not going to be much of an advantage being in one type of student orgs versus another. Having leadership roles, solid internships, and other achievements will help you get the interview. After that point, it's about how to you perform in the interview.
As a former interviewer at MBB, case performance is the no. 1 thing I look for. What do I want an analyst for? research and modeling. Some interpersonal skills definitely helps, but if he can't do math to save his life, he's a ding. my personal bias is to look out for high GPA. Some of these "student leadership" positions can be a joke. Kids get on these committees only to buff up their credentials, but they don't actually contribute much.

I was student body president at a top 25 undergrad non-ivy target/semi target school with a 3.0 liberal arts GPA.
I got an interview anywhere I wanted. But like the previous poster said, once you get the interview its how you perform.
I think it all comes down to how you sell youself. As long as in your leadership role you can show how you produced results/added value then it won't be mistaken for resume fluff.

I realize that once I make it to the interview, case performance is by and far the key thing. My question is really about whether or not a clear leadership position (not some fluff committee thing) in student government helps get you that interview in the first place when GPA is short of amazing.

Well, if you are talking about the process of getting the interview (though keep in mind there will be some differences depending on internship or full-time interviews), the key is to have a well-rounded field of achievements and activities, or have an extremely (and I mean extremely) impressive simple selling point.
So for full-time recruitment, if you have a decent GPA (3.5-3.6+ if you are at target, 3.7-3.8+ if you are at non-target), a competitive internship (banking, consulting, other competitive job), and a record of leadership, you'll more than likely get a look. I'm guessing you're at Princeton, so if you have a solid GPA and the leadership experience you mentioned, get an internship in banking or boutique consulting firm and you should at least be considered for a first-round.
Internships are different, since there are very few internship spots for undergrads. I've only met a few MBB interns before, and they tend to be complete rockstars in one way or another. (HYPWharton with high gpas, multiple internships, sophomore BB interns, etc). Think Bain as the largest intern program of the MBB.
