summered at ib, looking to switch to econ consulting advice?
hi everyone-
i'm a summer at an investment bank M&A division, looking to switch into econ consulting, in particular. i go to a top undergrad business school, but i have had very limited exposure to math, and did average on statistics classes that were part of our requirement. as i've decided recently to pursue a phd program, i've added math classes (multivariable calc, econometrics, more stat) to be able to strengthen my app for grad programs.
but i am looking to work for a bit before going to school and was hoping to switch to econ consulting, which i heard offers more valuable skillsets than banking does in terms of economics research.
with that i was hoping for a little insight as i've only been able to do basic research on this industry-
1) will top econ consulting companies like NERA largely over look my app due to the lack of math background? 2) do most of these companies expect their analysts to stick around for a while or leave in a year or two? 3) is my banking background a forte or a weakness as i've heard mixed opinions?
thanks in advance for any insight!
You should have solid success with places like Cornerstone. I think the banking background will be helpful; S&T experience is in many cases even more helpful. Generally, analysts move on in 2 years or so (usually to law or business school), although some certainly stay on and get promoted.
