Switching MBB Office After Internship

I will be interning this summer at an MBB Chicago office and am looking to live in New York full time. If I’m a high performer, is it possible to ask if I can switch offices for full time? If that wouldn’t work, would recruiting for one of the other MBB New York offices for full time work?

Switching offices within the same MBB firm after an internship is possible but not guaranteed. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some key points to consider:

  1. Switching Offices Within the Same Firm:

    • Office transfers depend on factors like headcount, performance, and the demand for roles in the desired office.
    • If you're a high performer, you may have a stronger case, but popular offices like New York are highly competitive.
    • It's crucial to communicate your preference early and professionally, ideally during or shortly after your internship.
  2. Recruiting for Another MBB Firm in New York:

    • Recruiting for a different MBB firm for full-time is possible, especially if you have a clear and compelling reason for the switch (e.g., interest in a specific practice area or location).
    • Having interned at one MBB firm can be an advantage, but you'll need to articulate your "why" effectively to avoid raising red flags about loyalty or fit.
  3. General Advice:

    • Be upfront about your location preference during discussions with recruiters or mentors.
    • Networking with individuals in the New York office of your current firm or other MBB firms can help you build connections and increase your chances.
    • Keep in mind that switching offices or firms is not uncommon, but it requires careful planning and strong performance during your internship.

If you’re set on New York, start laying the groundwork early to maximize your chances.
