Switching to MBB

Evening all,

Currently in the process of interviewing for McKinsey, come from a traditional finance background doing SS ER, interviewing for a specialist role in the strategy & corp finance role. Wanted to see if any of you guys have any tips about interviewing, what to highlight or those that have made the switch from finance to consulting how it went?

Thanks.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some key tips for transitioning from finance to consulting, particularly for a role at McKinsey in strategy and corporate finance:

  1. Highlight Transferable Skills:

    • Emphasize your financial modeling, valuation, and analytical skills, as these are highly relevant to strategy and corporate finance roles.
    • Showcase your ability to synthesize complex data into actionable insights, a skill often honed in equity research.
  2. Prepare for Case Interviews:

    • Consulting interviews often include case studies. While your finance background gives you a strong foundation, practice consulting-specific cases to get comfortable with the format.
    • Focus on structuring your thoughts, breaking down problems logically, and communicating clearly.
  3. Behavioral Questions:

    • Be ready to articulate your "why consulting" story. McKinsey will want to understand your motivation for switching from finance to consulting.
    • Highlight experiences where you demonstrated teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving, as these are core consulting competencies.
  4. Leverage Your Finance Background:

    • Position your finance experience as a unique value-add. For example, your expertise in equity research can be framed as a strong foundation for understanding industries, markets, and corporate strategy.
  5. Networking and Mentorship:

    • If possible, connect with current or former McKinsey consultants who transitioned from finance. They can provide insights into the interview process and what to expect in the role.
  6. Technical Knowledge:

    • Brush up on fundamental finance and accounting concepts, as they may come up in interviews, especially for a specialist role in strategy and corporate finance.
  7. Confidence in Transition:

    • Remember that consulting values diverse backgrounds. Your finance experience is an asset, and consulting firms like McKinsey appreciate candidates who bring a different perspective.

For additional preparation, consider exploring consulting-specific prep materials, such as case books or resources shared in WSO threads like the "Consulting (and Finance) Interview Prep materials content drop." These can provide valuable practice cases and insights. Good luck!
