T2 -> MBB Lateral

How difficult/frequent is this, and what does it take to make it happen? I know there were a few of these a couple of years ago when the economy was strong, but what will the lateral market look like (best guess) a year or two from now? Thanks in advance.

Based on previous WSO threads, lateraling from a Tier 2 (T2) consulting firm to MBB (McKinsey, BCG, Bain) can be challenging but is certainly possible. Here are some key points to consider:

Difficulty and Frequency:

  • Challenging but Possible: Transitioning from a T2 to MBB is not uncommon, especially for those with strong performance records and relevant experience.
  • Economic Conditions: The frequency of such transitions can be influenced by the state of the economy. Strong economic conditions generally make it easier to lateral as firms are more likely to hire.

What It Takes:

  • Strong Performance: Demonstrating exceptional performance in your current role is crucial. This includes high ratings in performance reviews and significant contributions to projects.
  • Networking: Building a strong network within the industry can be very beneficial. Reach out to current MBB consultants and alumni from your school or previous employers.
  • Relevant Experience: Having experience that aligns with the needs of MBB can make you a more attractive candidate. This includes experience in high-impact projects, leadership roles, and specialized skills.
  • Interview Preparation: MBB interviews are known for their rigor. Preparing thoroughly for case interviews and behavioral questions is essential.

Future Lateral Market:

  • Economic Uncertainty: Predicting the lateral market a year or two from now is difficult due to economic uncertainties. However, firms will always seek top talent, so opportunities will exist.
  • Adaptability: Being adaptable and continuously improving your skills will help you stay competitive in the lateral market.
