Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know:

  1. Hours and Workload: Consulting hours, even at Tier 2 firms like PA Consulting, are generally demanding. First-year consultants often work 12-14 hour days Monday through Thursday, with slightly shorter days on Fridays. As you gain experience, this may drop to 11-12 hour days. The intensity of the work is high, with constant analysis, presentations, and problem-solving tasks.

  2. Learning Opportunities: A 12-month internship at PA Consulting will expose you to diverse industries, functions, and client interactions. This variety is a hallmark of consulting and will help you develop a broad skill set, including problem-solving, client management, and technical expertise in tools like Excel and PowerPoint.

  3. Leveraging the Experience:

    • For Tier 2 or MBB Applications: Your internship at PA Consulting can be a strong stepping stone. To maximize your chances, focus on excelling in your workstreams, building a track record of high-quality deliverables, and networking within the firm. Highlight your achievements and the skills you’ve developed when applying to other firms.
    • Exit Opportunities: Tier 2 consulting firms like PA Consulting often lead to excellent exit opportunities in corporate strategy roles, tech firms, or even MBB if you perform exceptionally well and network effectively.
  4. Consulting Work Environment: The consulting environment is fast-paced and intense, with little downtime. You’ll need to be adaptable, proactive, and ready to handle tight deadlines. However, it’s also a collaborative space where you’ll work closely with smart, driven colleagues and clients.

Tips for Success: - Case Preparation: If you aim to transition to MBB, start preparing for case interviews early. Aim to complete 10-15 cases before your first interviews. - Networking: Build relationships within PA Consulting and the broader consulting community. Strong recommendations and connections can significantly boost your chances of landing a role at MBB or other Tier 2 firms. - Skill Development: Focus on mastering consulting fundamentals like structured problem-solving, effective communication, and data analysis.

This internship is a great opportunity to gain valuable experience and position yourself for future success in consulting. Good luck!
