Undergrad looking for advice regarding full-time recruiting
Not sure how many Canadians, specifically, Torontonians on this site - but any insights would help!
Profile:
- 3rd year undergrad business student at a top tier university
- extensive co-curricular experience (executive of three clubs)
- past experience owning and operating personal business (received entrepreneurial award from Ontario government)
- two interesting summer internships (first as a financial analyst with a brand name company, second as a financial literacy educator with a leading national charity)
- GPA is where the problem lies... first year GPA was T-E-R-R-I-B-L-E... second-year was mediocre (3.0/4), third year sessional GPA (3.7/4.0)... cGPA... hurts me to even mention
I'm really interested in pursuing a career with MBB, and Monitor-Deloitte... however, I really have no clue how I am stacking up against my competition. I have networked extensively with Deloitte, not so much with MBB with the exception of Bain. Does my profile set me up adequately for F/T recruitment (very subjective, I know... but I think I am looking for some personal anecdotes of people with low GPA's getting hired/advice? So don't give me that crap 'work hard, don't give up' or 'you don't need my opinion'... cause I am working hard, and well, i want to know if there's even a remote possibility of getting hired with a low cGPA).
If your GPA is 3.5, you won't be interviewing at MBB. Deloitte is similar, as are most of the other tier 2 and big 4 firms.
So you need to network with people at the firms you're interested in to get referred to HR for an interview. This can be tough because they have to vouch for you, and most people won't do that for a stranger that sends them an e-mail or message via Linkedin. If you want pull with HR, you'll have to go higher up in a company.
Many people with low GPAs or from non-targets who are interested in consulting take non-consulting jobs (such a business analyst somewhere) and then transfer in after a year or two as an experienced hire; that could always be an option for you.
You can only network, apply, and hope to get an interview. FWIW, I haven't met many people at tier 2 shops with 3.5 gpa, not to mention MBB. As far as how well you stack up against your competition, you don't really... Better network your ass off and hope.
