Use an r1 interview with another strategy role to try and get an MBB r1

I applied to MBB ft from a target good gpa. Only got rejected from BCG. Have not heard anything from mck or Bain. Assuming it’s a rejection, but it’s not officially.

I got a round 1 invite to a similar strategy role for a bank. Can I reach out to my mck and Bain recruiters and update them on that and express my interest in MBB and their firm? Or would that look bad/should I leave it as is?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, reaching out to McKinsey and Bain recruiters to update them on your round 1 invite for a similar strategy role can be a strategic move, but it must be done carefully. Here's how to approach it:

  1. Frame it as a Positive Update: Instead of making it seem like you're using the other opportunity as leverage, position it as an update on your professional journey. Highlight your continued interest in MBB and their firm specifically.

  2. Express Enthusiasm for MBB: Reiterate why McKinsey or Bain is your top choice and how their firm aligns with your career goals. This ensures your message doesn't come across as transactional.

  3. Be Concise and Professional: Keep your communication short and to the point. Mention the round 1 invite as a sign of your growing experience and interest in strategy roles, but avoid overemphasizing it.

  4. Timing Matters: If you haven't officially been rejected by McKinsey or Bain, this could be a good opportunity to remind them of your application and express your eagerness to contribute to their firm.

However, be cautious. If not done tactfully, this could come across as desperation or an attempt to pressure them into making a decision. Focus on showcasing your enthusiasm and fit for MBB rather than comparing opportunities.
