What is the consulting industry like in Brussels?

Hi everyone,

I just wrapped up my second year of undergrad and I'm thinking ahead, exploring consulting opportunities in Brussels after my master's. I'm particularly drawn to Brussels because of the strong presence of geopolitical work (EU institutions, NATO, defense/public sector), which is an area I’m passionate about. Seeing as this is sort of a niche topic, there isn't much info online, so I figured this would be a great place to start getting a feel of what consulting in Brussels is like and if it's something I genuinely want to go into. Here are some questions I have:

  • What type of work does each firm typically focus on?
  • What is each firm's reputation in the city? (beyond projects — e.g., culture, prestige, network, etc.)
  • Which firms are most involved in geopolitical/public/defense sector work? (EU institutions, NATO, etc.)
  • How common is global staffing or cross-border project work?
  • How international are the offices? (Is English/French enough, or does Dutch open more doors?)
  • What is life like, in general, as a 20-something-year-old consulting professional in Brussels? (I have never been to Brussels)

I’m a French speaker (not from France), fluent in Italian, Russian, and Ukrainian — but no Dutch. I have strong grades, strong ECs, clear motivation story and I will complete a summer internship at an elite boutique strategy this summer, hoping to get a return offer for another summer internship post-3rd year or a longer off-cycle internship for my gap year (planning to take a gap year between my bachelor's graduation in 2026 and starting my master's in 2027).

  • Planning to apply to the following programs:
    • HEC – Master in Strategic Management
    • LBS – MiM
    • INSEAD – MiM
    • LSE – MSc in Economics & Management
    • ESSEC – MiM
    • Sciences Po – Master in Finance & Strategy
    • LSE – MSc in Strategy & Management
    • Imperial – MSc in Economics & Strategy for Business
    • ESSEC – MSc in Strategy & Management of International Business
    • LSE – MiM
    • Bocconi – Master in International Management

Questions:

  • Are these target schools strong enough for Brussels consulting?
  • How local-heavy is recruiting?
  • Any particular tips if aiming for more public/geopolitical-focused consulting work?

Thanks to anyone who can help!
