What kind of club involvement would allow me to get into MBB?

I’m currently a sophomore at HYPW with a ~3.9 GPA, planning to apply for MBB summer internships. I’m most interested in smaller offices (Charlotte, Dallas, Atlanta, Detroit, etc.), and longer term I’m considering PE after consulting.

Wanted to sanity check how my extracurriculars look, since I don’t come from a traditional consulting club background.

Current involvement:

  • President of an international relations–focused club
  • Director-level role in an investment / PE-style club
  • General member of a more casual sales-oriented organization

I don’t have consulting club experience, which is what I’m slightly unsure about.

In terms of internships, I have a strategy internship with a small business for my freshman summer and will be doing an internship at TikTok in London this upcoming sophomore summer. I’ve also conducted development economics research with a professor at my university throughout this academic year and hope for it to be published by the end of this school year in May.

P.S. As a separate question, how weird would it look applying to say McKinsey’s Dallas office as someone from HYPW?

Would appreciate any insight, thanks!

We aren't really looking at your "clubs". Might spend 10-15 seconds at most on your resume. HYPW 3.9 + TikTok internship will get you the interview. I wouldn't stress too much. Also if you're interested in PE, don't bother with consulting, do banking. NYC MBB, let alone Detroit MBB, might get you PE but you will have find it orders of magnitude easier coming from BB/EB.

Don’t think I’d survive four consecutive years of 80+ hour weeks (2 years IB and 2 years PE). Also, even if I don’t land MF PE I’m okay with that (though I’ll still be gunning for MF PE from MBB of course). I’d be plenty happy with landing a role at a MM or UMM fund in NYC

Also would prefer having the broader skillset that consulting offers rather than the narrower finance skillset offered by IB. I’m willing to work in a lower tier city for two years if it means getting an MBB offer. Also helps that it would be in a LCOL city so I’d have some decent savings to put into investments early on within my career.

yeah i mean i also talked abt some theater stuff in one of my preprepped answers to behav questions but that was about it EC wise

Based in London but at my MBB you're graded on Education, Work Experience and Extra Curriculars. HYPW + strong GPA + TikTok London internship means you'll basically pass CV screening as long as you have decent extra curriculars. To have the strongest profile possible, I'd target a committee position on a major society (e.g. President/Treasurer at your uni's main finance/econ society) and also show achievements in sports/music etc
