Would anyone be willing to share what got them a freshman internship in consulting/tech/product management?

I am currently a freshman at Umich Ross and do not have any plans for a summer internship. I’m in a consulting group through Umich and have worked with several clients, which I could potentially leverage for an internship if I reach out and ask if they have any work I can do. Any tips? I know freshman internships aren’t super common, but are internships with smaller companies (like startups) a good resume builder? Are there any other resources that I can find potential internships through? I’m interested mostly in Product management, but I wouldn’t mind a role in consulting/entry-level tech.

Freshman internships in consulting, tech, or product management are indeed less common, but they are achievable with the right strategy. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some actionable tips:

  1. Leverage Your Consulting Group Experience: Your involvement in a consulting group at Umich is a great starting point. Reach out to the clients you've worked with and inquire if they have any summer opportunities. Highlight the value you’ve already provided and express your interest in contributing further.

  2. Target Startups and Smaller Companies: Internships with startups or smaller firms can be excellent resume builders. These roles often provide hands-on experience and allow you to take on more responsibility, which can be a strong talking point in future interviews for larger firms.

  3. Networking: Start reaching out to alumni from Umich Ross who are in consulting, tech, or product management roles. Networking is one of the most effective ways to uncover hidden opportunities. Use LinkedIn, alumni databases, or even cold emails to connect with professionals in your areas of interest.

  4. Cold Outreach to Local Firms: For consulting or tech roles, consider reaching out to local firms, startups, or even boutique consulting firms. Many smaller companies are open to hiring motivated students for summer roles, especially if you can demonstrate your skills and enthusiasm.

  5. Explore Corporate Finance or F500 Internships: If you’re open to roles outside of product management, consider internships in corporate finance or Fortune 500 companies. These roles can provide valuable experience and are often more accessible to freshmen.

  6. Utilize School Resources: Take advantage of Umich’s career services, on-campus info sessions, and job boards. These resources often list internships that are specifically targeted at underclassmen.

  7. Cold-Email Templates: If you’re reaching out to professionals or firms, use structured cold-email templates to introduce yourself and express your interest. WSO has a ton of templates that can help you craft effective outreach messages.

  8. Be Persistent: Securing a freshman internship requires persistence. Reach out to as many companies and professionals as possible, and don’t get discouraged by rejections.

Remember, the goal is to gain relevant experience and build your resume for future opportunities. Even if the role isn’t exactly in product management or consulting, any experience that demonstrates your skills and work ethic will be valuable. Good luck!
