I've been a credit analyst for two years now and I enjoy the work. The problem is that it seems that this position is generally used as a stepping stone to portfolio manager and relationship manager. I'd love to move up the ranks, but I these positions seems less analytical and more based on networking, shaking hands, business development - things I don't see myself enjoying long-term. My bank is smaller ($2bn) and doesn't have stratified credit analyst positions, but when I look at job openings for the larger banks, you see things like "Credit Analyst 3", which makes me wonder if there exists a hierarchy of credit in bigger banks that can amount to a full career, or if it's still viewed just as an intermediary step. And outside of commercial corporate banking, are there more advanced positions for former credit analysts? Like with Mezz debt or something else that's specialized? PS - I'm not considering investment banking or something else that would consume my whole life (I enjoy the 8-5:30 life).
