B4 Valuation -> Corp Dev/Strat

Hi WSO,

As the title states, I’m currently an analyst at a B4 in the Business Valuation practice in a city such as LA/SF. I really want to get into some sort of Corporate Finance role at preferably a TMT company. How realistic would my chances be of making this move after a year on the desk?

FYI: Our firm has seen multiple analysts leave for IB, but ideally I would skip an IB stint and go straight to Corp Fin. Is this realistic?

Worked with someone who pulled off the move (from Valuation to Corp. Dev.)

It's been a few years since I worked with that person so I am a bit fuzzy on how the transition was made.

Would recommend applying for roles as they come up plus networking (which is stronger in IB to be fair). The Key is to demonstrate a strong interest in M&A work and tie aspects of your experience to the role and the industry for Corp. Dev. role as much as possible.

I agree with this. I made the move from MM valuations to Corp Dev at a larger international power and energy company, then leading Corp Dev function for a publicly traded HCIT company.

Honestly, both jobs I landed were through just applying online (I would still suggest networking). I would suggest formatting your resume to look as deal like as possible (list a few engagements - especially if they are fairness/opinion or pre-deal type of PPA work, the deal size, what your role was - would focus on the modeling aspect etc.)

Good luck!

Thanks! How long were you in valuations and how was the role translated to Corp Dev?
