CFA Level 1

I'm in a FLDP at F500 company and have interest in getting into more investment/capital markets roles in the long term. Opportunities exist within the company like business development, IR, FX, and would also be open to exploring other industries/positions more aligned with markets. Thoughts on taking CFA level 1 to improve resume and show interest in that field? Feel like FP&A and treasury roles aren't enough to land a role that I want but not sure if this is the way to go about it.

Taking the CFA Level 1 can be a strategic move for your long-term goals, especially if you're aiming to transition into investment or capital markets roles. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some key considerations:

  1. Resume Boost and Signaling Interest: Passing CFA Level 1 demonstrates your commitment to the finance field and your willingness to invest time in self-study. It signals to potential employers that you're serious about transitioning into more market-focused roles like business development, IR, or FX.

  2. Relevance to Your Current Role: While FP&A and treasury roles provide a solid foundation, they may not fully align with the analytical and market-oriented skills required for investment roles. The CFA curriculum, particularly Level 1, covers topics like financial analysis, portfolio management, and economics, which can help bridge this gap.

  3. Networking and Internal Opportunities: Within your F500 company, pursuing the CFA can make you a more attractive candidate for internal roles in business development or IR. It also provides a talking point when networking with professionals in capital markets roles.

  4. Opportunity Cost: Keep in mind the time commitment for CFA Level 1 (~300 hours of study). If you're confident that this aligns with your career goals, it’s worth the effort. However, don’t neglect networking and building relationships, as these are equally critical for breaking into new roles.

  5. Long-Term Value: The CFA is particularly valuable for roles in investment management, equity research, and other analytical positions. If your ultimate goal is to move into these areas, starting with Level 1 is a logical step.

In summary, pursuing CFA Level 1 can enhance your resume and help you stand out for roles more aligned with capital markets. However, balance this with networking and gaining relevant experience to maximize your chances of success.
