Corp Dev - Sourcing and Strategy / Market Intelligence

Hey all - was curious if anyone has worked in a 'Sourcing and Strategy / Market Intellegince function' within a Corp Dev team? At a high level, my understanding is that the team focuses on top-of-funnel M&A work covering things like industry trends, competitive landscape, market share analysis, target analysis, etc. From what I have gathered the function does not focus on deal execution (i.e. M&A modeling and process work). This is a relatively new group to me so I would love to hear people's thoughts on:

  • Day to day work
  • Work / Life balance
  • Career Path / Progression
  • Skills to be successful
  • And any other pros / cons one should consider!

Thank you in advance!

Different companies utilize different structures/titles, etc., but sourcing/prospecting roles like this are growing in popularity and can be good gigs. Potential tasks could include market sizing, competitive analysis, lead identification, prospecting, and leading deals to the LOI stage. These are very valuable skills if your goal is to eventually lead the Corp Dev function for a company, and the comp can be attractive if you negotiate a bonus formula that’s based on EBITDA you bring in.
