Engineering to Corp Dev to???
Hi All,
This is my first post. Hope this is the right sub-forum. I'll share a brief background, my aspirations and my queries. Looking forward to the community's guidance!
Background/Context:
- I'm 5 years out of undergrad. Undergrad's in non-ComputerScience Engineering. Not the most prestigious undergrad.
- 5 YoE in a complex, customer-facing, high-tech engineering role. My company's not F100 but a niche (Test and Measurement, for those who know) h/w + s/w company that serves the **top** Semiconductor, Automotive and Aero/Def companies. My specialization is in the Semiconductors space. (think Intel, QComm, NXP, TI, etc.,)
- I *might* have an opportunity to move to Corp Dev within my org at some entry role. We're not suuuper acquisitive, not sleepy either.
Queries:
- Given that I'm yet to do my MBA, what exit opps (with and without an MBA) am I looking at, post a brief stint in Corp Dev? I'm deliberately asking this question before stating my aspirations as I'd like the answers to be aspiration-blind.
- [Specific question] : After a brief Corp Dev stint, how challenging is it to move to a Corp Dev role in a slightly different industry? Not a massive switch like going to the food industry. But something like my current high-tech to say, internet companies/Software tech?
Aspirations:
- So, I'm a multipotentialite (think Da Vinci....but minus the genius). My strongest innate skill is being good *at* people (peep my username). I'm curious, analytically effective and have the drive to apply myself to interesting jobs/challenges. In a nutshell, my interests are all over the place because I'm interested in a very wide variety of roles. Suffering from analysis paralysis.
- I enjoy working in multifaceted roles, lean teams and with a variety of customers from all walks of life.
- The closest I've been able to narrow down is VC - working at the intersection of tech, business, people. Plenty of 'diversity' in terms of the people I meet and getting to wear many hats. Early stage through Growth stage VC, specifically.
- Management Consulting seems attractive too for the same reason.
Given all the above, I'm curious to hear your thoughts!

Q1: Your best and safest exit would be IB/VC given you are in tech
Q2: Not hard at all
Thanks for replying. Would you say the shift to VC(or Growth Equity) is possible without an MBA?
From corp dev? I am in P&U and I can get interviews.
Thanks. Can I DM you? If you don't mind, I have a few q's
