F50 FP&A to Moelis Research Analyst/Business Management - Restructuring

Hi all,

I've just finished a finance rotational program at an F50 company and - as with most analysts in my class - have been quite unhappy with my final placement following the program. Despite campaigning heavily for roles I was interested in, the new program manager seems to have placed us mostly at random, leading to a substantial exodus from the company. As such, I've been actively searching for jobs and have been contacted by and interviewed by Moelis for a Research Analyst/Business Management position. From speaking with associates and a few VPs through the interview process, this seems like an extremely exciting opportunity - I recognize the role is still a couple steps removed from the front office, but it seems that my responsibilities would involve origination/research for the restructuring group, ad-hoc analytics, and significant access and exposure to the restructuring group.

Because my experience is limited to the two-year, mostly FP&A, rotational program that I completed, it seems that this opportunity is a very unique chance to pivot closer to the front office without going to business school or moving to corporate development first - everyone at the firm I've spoken with has said that my responsibilities and career development will depend largely on what tasks I'm willing to take on and the skills I have & develop. I'm confident I can handle the responsibilities, and am generally very excited about this opportunity.

My question to the seasoned vets here is whether this would be a wise career move, especially considering that I really do not want to be stuck in FP&A forever (a field that has its moments but generally seems painfully repetitive/cyclical). I'm certain my work-life balance will go to shit, and know that this is still essentially a support function just like FP&A, but the proximity to the front office (both in terms of visibility/learning and actual interaction and influence) is extremely appealing to me. Would love to hear all your thoughts!
