FLDP from non-target

I'm an Accounting and MIS major that is looking for opportunities to join an FLDP in technology, CPG, Pharma, or retail. At my school, only one F500 have established recruiting for their FLDP. What advice do you have for me to when applying to other companies like Microsoft, GE, General Mills, and others that don't recruit at my school?

Currently, I'm just applying through their online postings but I know that the chances are pretty slim. There's also no alumni from my school that currently works or worked at the companies that I've mentioned so I'm not sure on what to do next besides cold calling.

Any advice or tips will be appreciated!

I got into my F200 FLDP even though there was no recruiting. What I did was I figured out who the FLDP program manager was, and I sent a brief cold email saying I was a senior at XYZ University looking into fldps in the ABC industry. I said that I heard about their FLDP and was very interested, and that I'd love to get a chance to chat on the phone with them.

Use linkedin to figure out who the managers are. You can either find the managers on linkedin, or you'll have to reach out to current program participants to try to get a name and number.

Its critical that you start IMMEDIATELY. Most schools are having their career fairs now, so first and second round interviews are happening this month and next month. You have a small window to get on the list. Trust me though, it can be done.

Thanks for the advice! I'm going to try and do the Linkedin route and cold email people. So far, I only had luck with getting in contact with one F500. Unfortunately, the spots were filled before I finished my application. Did you use Linkedin Premium when you were looking for people to connect with?

Was your cold email template just roughly those few lines? i.e.

Subject: (What would be a good subject line?)

My name is XYZ and I am a senior at XYZ university. I was interested in FLDPS's in the ABC industry and was hoping to speak with you regarding the FLDP at (their company). Do you have some time for a quick call? I would appreciate the chance to learn about your experiences.

Is that a solid email?

I didn't use premium, but I'm sure it couldn't hurt. I just searched "XYZ company FLDP" in linkedin or google and normally found a few hits. The other thing you could do is to figure out their company email convention ([email protected]) and then send an email to their work email.. Sometimes people don't check linkedin very often. A lot of F500 recruiting has already started, but don't get discouraged! Most of the people in my FLDP class were already interviewing by this time last year (and signed in November) but there were a couple who got signed in May when the program managers needed to fill spaces of people who reneged. Reach out to all of the big companies to get on their radar for the future, and also reach out to the smaller companies who might be a little late in their recruiting.

Believe it or not - I ended up getting into a FLDP program via an initial phone interview via monster. Keep looking and keep your head-up. I got in the door with all the other guys from the target schools and I'm still here 5 years later! Keep your head-up and keep networking, networking, networking. I know it can be a frustrating process. The spring semester of my senior year was probably one of the most frustrating 3-5 month stretches of my life. Tons of first interviews and they just continued to not pane out.

You might also look at IT LDP type programs if you have the MIS background. If you get in the door, it's usually pretty easy to rotate around the business (especially if you're a high-performer). Keep going, be willing to sell yourself and keep your head-up.
