Looking to get a Master Program to get into finance
Hi everyone, looking for some advice for getting into finance. I graduated in June 2020 from a NY state university. Right now working in low level accounting job but want to get into the world of finance. I was looking at Baruch's Master programs, the most affordable one for me right now. I don't plan on IB (which is impossible I understand) but I want to get into other finance roles, i.e. corporate finance, fp&a etc. I took quantitative finance classes in undergrad like Continuous Time Finance and did really well on it and liked the topic, but not getting any internships messed up my chances of getting into any kind of finance roles. Looking around forums, I understand MSF from Baruch is not highly regarded but it's the only school that is somewhat affordable for me. In your opinion, is it possible to network really hard while getting the program and land in finance? I am also going to start my CFA journey alongside the masters, so do you think I should rather do a more technical masters (Quantitative modelling or statistics) or MSF, while pursuing the CFA? Any feedback would be appreciated. Thank You.
This seems to be overkill. If you want to get into corporate finance and you have a background as an accountant, I think you pretty easily could apply to and get accepted in entry level financial analyst roles. Most of the work is based in accounting at that level, so I think you should have a good path if you spin your resume correctly. A masters might be overkill, a CFA would not be helpful (I don't know any corpfin analysts with a CFA).
Hi, Thank You so much for the reply. I definitely misunderstood corporate finance. What area of a finance career would deal with more on the finance side than accounting? I was thinking of getting the masters to increase networking opportunities and deviate towards a more finance role than accounting. Also, the MSF at Baruch is on the affordable side, so I was thinking I would make it up if I can land a good role in finance.
Ik ppl who has BB corporate finance roles from a MS in finance from Baruch. You still have to grind on internships in your grad* school though.
Oh wow that’s very motivating to hear. Thank you for sharing that. This is a second shot at life for me. I will network as much as possible and try to get internships. The people you know, are they on WSO? Is there a way I could ask them for some advice regarding the Baruch’s MSF program? Thank you again for your reply.
Yeah and grab off cycle internships. Since you go to Baruch it would be convenient for you.
They aren’t but you can PM me a few questions and I can try to ask for you.
Definitely will be PMing you with some questions, feel free to answer whenever you have a chance. Im planning to start the MSF spring of 2022, so at the end of January.
Alright. But you should honestly ask more ppl. This is just some anecdotal data. These people really go above and beyond in their respective fields.
