Using CFA to get out of Corp Finance?
I've been working in Corp Finance for the past 4-5 years and have been thinking of trying to exit/transition to something more related to AM, ER or something of the sort. I don't really want to go get an MBA due to the cost and was thinking of sitting for the CFA exams as a way to help. Has anyone else done this and can lend some words of advice? Is this even possible/a thing?
For context I live in the northeast (not nyc), BS in Finance from well known but not a target school for Finance.
Based on the most helpful WSO content, pursuing the CFA can indeed be a viable path to transition from Corporate Finance to roles in Asset Management (AM) or Equity Research (ER). The CFA designation is highly regarded in these fields and demonstrates a strong commitment to mastering investment-related knowledge. Here are some key insights:
Value of the CFA in AM/ER:
The CFA is primarily most useful in Asset Management and Equity Research. It provides a deep understanding of financial analysis, portfolio management, and investment principles, which are directly applicable to these roles.
Transition Feasibility:
While the CFA can open doors, it’s important to pair it with networking and relevant experience. Networking with professionals in AM/ER and leveraging headhunters can significantly improve your chances of breaking into these fields.
Alternative Pathways:
If you’re not pursuing an MBA, consider roles that bridge Corporate Finance and AM/ER, such as FP&A roles in asset management firms or positions that involve financial modeling and analysis. These can serve as stepping stones while you work on earning the CFA.
Challenges:
Be prepared for the time commitment required for the CFA exams (200-300 hours per level). Additionally, transitioning without prior direct experience in AM/ER may require persistence and strategic positioning of your skills.
Regional Considerations:
Living in the Northeast (outside NYC) might limit immediate opportunities, but targeting firms in nearby financial hubs or leveraging remote opportunities could help.
In summary, the CFA is a strong credential that can support your transition, but combining it with networking, strategic role selection, and showcasing transferable skills will be crucial for success.
