Blue Owl Data Science Team
Have seen some postings for Blue Owl Data Science roles. Does anyone know if this is a real FO or investing role? Or is it MO and more just number crunching/reporting? Seems like they have a fleshed out team with good talent.
Would be interesting to hear color on this because I think it would be unique if there's a private credit firm trying to incorporate this stuff, but also seems weird given how much of the business is sourcing oriented.
Based on the most helpful WSO content, roles like those in the Blue Owl Data Science team are likely to fall into a hybrid category. While they may not be traditional Front Office (FO) roles directly involved in revenue generation or deal-making, they could still play a strategic and impactful role in investment decision-making.
Private credit firms incorporating data science are likely leveraging advanced analytics, machine learning, and other quantitative methods to enhance sourcing, underwriting, and portfolio management. This could mean the role involves building models to assess credit risk, optimize deal structures, or identify market opportunities—tasks that go beyond basic Middle Office (MO) number crunching or reporting.
However, the extent to which these roles are considered FO depends on their direct involvement in investment decisions. If the data science team is actively influencing or driving investment strategies, it could be seen as closer to FO. On the other hand, if the role is more about providing support or insights for the investment team, it would lean towards MO.
Given the mention of a "fleshed-out team with good talent," it seems Blue Owl is serious about integrating data science into its operations, which could make this a unique and innovative opportunity in the private credit space. If you're considering such a role, it might be worth clarifying the team's direct impact on investment decisions during the interview process.
