CB to PC?

2 years experience in credit portfolio mgmt/underwriting (middle market and mid-corp) at top 3 commercial bank. Will I have a decent shot at moving to a Private Credit fund in the Chicago market? Or will I have too much competition against IB?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, transitioning from Commercial Banking (CB) to Private Credit (PC) is possible, but it comes with challenges, especially in competitive markets like Chicago. Here’s what you need to know:

  1. Your Background:

    • With 2 years of experience in credit portfolio management and underwriting at a top 3 commercial bank, you have a solid foundation in credit analysis and risk management. This is valuable for Private Credit roles, as they often require strong underwriting and structuring skills.
  2. Challenges:

    • Competition from IB Candidates: Many Private Credit funds prefer candidates with Investment Banking (IB) experience, particularly from LevFin, DCM, or RX groups, due to their deal exposure and familiarity with complex credit agreements.
    • Limited Spots: The Private Credit space is smaller than IB, meaning fewer opportunities and more competition.
  3. How to Improve Your Chances:

    • Highlight Relevant Skills: Emphasize your underwriting experience, ability to structure loans, and exposure to middle-market and mid-corporate clients. These align well with Private Credit requirements.
    • Network Aggressively: Leverage connections in the Chicago market and reach out to professionals in Private Credit funds. Networking can help you bypass some of the competition.
    • Consider CFA or Additional Credentials: While not mandatory, a CFA designation can demonstrate your commitment to the credit space and enhance your profile.
    • Target Senior-Focused Direct Lenders: Anecdotally, transitioning from CB to Private Credit is more feasible at senior-focused direct lenders compared to mezzanine or distressed funds.
  4. Alternative Path:

    • If you face challenges breaking directly into Private Credit, consider transitioning to an IB LevFin or DCM role first. This can provide the deal experience and technical skills that Private Credit funds highly value.

While the competition is tough, your experience in credit portfolio management and underwriting gives you a decent shot, especially if you position yourself strategically and focus on networking.
