CIBC Levfin Team Toronto?

Currently involved in a hiring process for the team and was wondering if anyone has intel on the culture/comp of the team? I spoke with someone briefly years ago on the team but didn't think much of it, I know that it rolls up into their commercial banking arm but curious how it trickles down into culture/comp.

PS the search function on this website is not the most helpful lol

Based on the most helpful WSO content, the CIBC Leveraged Finance (LevFin) team in Toronto operates under their commercial banking arm. Here's what you need to know:

  1. Structure and Focus:

    • The team handles leveraged loans of all sizes, primarily on their balance sheet.
    • They also manage subordinated/mezzanine debt on the same platform.
    • Unlike some other banks, CIBC does not have a capital markets LevFin group arranging Term Loan Bs (TLBs) in Canada. This function is covered by their Debt Capital Markets (DCM) desk in NYC.
  2. Culture:

    • While specific cultural details for the LevFin team aren't explicitly mentioned, CIBC's broader culture in Calgary and Toronto is described as decent but leaning towards the harder-working side.
    • The bank is known for having a professional environment with a focus on delivering results.
  3. Compensation:

    • Compensation specifics for the LevFin team aren't detailed, but given its integration with the commercial banking arm, it may not align with traditional investment banking pay scales. Bonuses and overall comp could be more modest compared to IB-focused LevFin teams.

If you're in the hiring process, it might be worth asking directly about team dynamics, deal flow, and how compensation is structured relative to performance. Good luck!
