Consulting to Private Credit
I am a rising sophomore at Indiana University and am currently pursuing the consulting path, but I feel as though after 2 years of work experience I will leave. Is it possible to go from consulting to private credit? If so, how exactly would I do it? What do I need to learn?
Would imagine it being quite difficult. PC has more nuances; tranches, leins, covenants, maturities, yields, etc. that a consultant doesn't really touch. Most applicable would probably be Rx consulting.
Bumping an old comment... anyone can take this. Is Rx Consulting -> Private Credit achievable from a firm like A&M? Especially if you got into Rx Consulting earlier than is typical?
Yes, MMPE also been done - not just distressed funds.
A&M is a kill or be killed firm, if you excel there then you’ll get paid and have options. If you can’t elbow into work then you’ll get trashed. Not everyone can succeed in the culture, it’s similar to high flow m&a groups.
Why would you not just go to PC out of undergrad. Why do this consulting nonsense, you’re a rising sophomore dude…. You havnt even had an internship yet and you’re acting like you’re pidgeonholed

No you shouldn’t. If you want to do private credit focus on getting an internship at a private credit/direct lending shop or go the IB route i.e. Leveraged Finance group
As someone currently hiring PC analysts, we do not consider consultants. At minimum, go work for a ratings agency if you cant swing IB or CB.
Out of curiosity, what about credit research?
I havent really seen any credit research resumes to be honest. If its from a reputable shop I would probably consider the candidate. Even Rating agencies arent ideal, I'd rather a boutique M&A guy than a rating agency guy.
when my shop launched a DL strategy, the credit research guys were writing the initial papers
