MM Direct Lending to LO AM. What's the Path?
Hey everyone,
Looking for some advice before I start at a MM DL (Antares, Blue Owl) doing pretty vanilla leveraged lending after undergrad. Not really sure what a good path is from this starting point but I am considering staying around the realm of fundamental research later down in my career, which seems to match LO AM. Would a switch to sellside ER early on (HY/SS), more time in PC then an MBA, or another path better to set myself up best.
Based on the most helpful WSO content, transitioning from MM Direct Lending (DL) to Long-Only Asset Management (LO AM) is a feasible path, but it requires strategic moves. Here's a breakdown of potential steps:
Sell-Side Equity Research (ER):
Moving to sell-side ER, particularly in high-yield (HY) or special situations (SS), can be a strong stepping stone. This role will help you build a solid foundation in fundamental research, modeling, and industry expertise, which aligns well with the skill set required in LO AM.
Private Credit (PC) Experience:
Spending more time in private credit could also be beneficial, especially if you focus on fundamental credit analysis. However, this path might limit your exposure to equity research, which is often more relevant for LO AM roles.
MBA as a Pivot Point:
Pursuing an MBA from a top-tier program can provide a reset and open doors to LO AM. It also allows you to network with alumni in the industry and potentially secure internships or full-time roles in AM.
Direct Transition to LO AM:
While less common, some professionals have transitioned directly from MM DL to LO AM by leveraging their credit analysis expertise. This is more likely if you target LO AM firms with a focus on credit or fixed income.
Networking and Internal Moves:
Networking is critical. Building relationships with professionals in LO AM and showcasing your transferable skills can help you make the leap. Additionally, some MM DL firms may have internal opportunities or connections to LO AM.
Each path has its pros and cons, but sell-side ER combined with an MBA is often considered the most direct and effective route to LO AM, especially if you're aiming for equity-focused roles.
