Thoughts on Golub vs. Whitehorse vs. Comvest?

Wondering what everyone’s thoughts are on the three above platforms across common structures, mandate/overall thesis, and any perception of culture. Comp is helpful but have a ballpark for each so not totally needed but always appreciated!

Also any color on nuances in interview processes would be great but likely better over PM. Thanks all!

golub is a MM/UMM flow shop so they’ll compete against Ares/Apollo on the high end and Antares/MidCap on the lower/MM end. I’ve heard comp is great and people like working there. Whitehorse does hairy deals and have heard the culture is tougher (as is the case with their investment mandate). I’m not as familiar with Comvest, but would also probably view them as a flow shop. I think they were bought by ManuLife so they’ll want to deploy. Unsure on culture there

Golub is bigger than the other two. Bigger deals, agents some of them. It’s a good experience with good comp. Associates are segmented by strategy, but their opportunistic credit team does both cash flow and ABF deals. Obviously top choice given its size, prestige, comp, etc.

Whitehorse is a hairy direct lender. But that’s all they really do - no opportunistic or specialty finance (?) I also hear culture is harsh.

Comvest got bought by Manulife - just like Pinebridge with MetLife. Not sure what that means but historically they do specialty finance, opportunistic, and direct lending (similar strategy to white horse) and you get exposure to all three. I interviewed there a few months ago - seemed like solid folk. They comp slightly under market though.

Golub commentary above is accurate, top brand and very respected. That said, upward mobility is tough and WLB for juniors i have heard is not great.  Deals are also more vanilla. That said, if you are planning to stay in DL, I'd say this would be your top choice.  Folks tend to stay there for a reason

HIG Whitehorse commentary above is dated. They are now mostly middle market sponsor, they u/w complex stuff but its not near what opportunistic shops do. I see them in bankgroups, they are very sharp.  You will work hard and comp is probably [middle] of market.  A good choice for DL, and a transferable skill set.

Comvest was similar to Whitehorse pre-acquisition, did sponsor deals but more middle market and able to u/w more complex situations. They are also pretty smart.  That said, it seems they are morphing post-merger, and its not clear how the firms are co-existing.  Can't really rank this one, would be interested to hear someone's opinion that has worked with them in recent months.

For what its worth, if you get an offer at any of these three that is a big accomplishment. Best of luck.

This is awesome, thank you! Do you have any more sense for WLB? Coming from a junior seat that is normally ~60/wk and wondering if it will be a significant step up from there.
