Partners Group - Private Credit

Hi all,

Have a case study upcoming with Partners Group in London in the next few weeks and wanted to ask a few questions.

1. How is Partners Group private credit viewed / reputation etc. vs. industry peers?

2. How are exit opportunities?

3. Are they typically open to switching teams internally?

I have never really considered private credit as a career and always aimed to switch to PE (currently 2nd year IB Analyst) but this is a concrete opportunity that might be very interesting. Just wondering if it will limit future opportunities on the buy-side down the line. Any input is much appreciated!

Based on the most helpful WSO content:

  1. Reputation of Partners Group Private Credit vs. Industry Peers:

    • Partners Group is viewed as a stable and conservatively run firm with a variety of vehicles and management fee streams, which contributes to its platform stability. This stability is a positive factor in its reputation within the industry.
  2. Exit Opportunities:

    • Partners Group has shown strong exit opportunities at both junior and mid/senior levels. Recent exits from the firm include prestigious names such as Blackstone Credit, KKR Infra, Sixth Street, Ares Special Opportunities, TA Associates, ECP, EQT Infra, KKR RE Credit, Tishman Speyer, Vitruvian Partners, and HIG PE. This indicates that the platform is well-regarded and provides solid exit opportunities across various sectors.
  3. Internal Team Switching:

    • Partners Group offers a 3-year analyst program that includes rotations through PE, RE PE, and Infrastructure PE. This rotational program suggests that there is flexibility and potential for internal team switching, providing analysts with exposure to different areas within the firm.

Given your background as a 2nd year IB Analyst and your interest in switching to PE, the rotational program at Partners Group could offer you valuable experience and optionality post-analyst program. While private credit might not have been your initial focus, the firm's strong reputation and exit opportunities could make this a worthwhile consideration for your career on the buy-side.

Credit groups in PE-led firms are weak as leadership doesn’t really understand credit and ends up chasing yield, which is recipe for low performance in credit. Further, if you are not a T1 platform you get adversely selected on deals ie the worst deal remain available to you. It’s easy to DD in recruiting: ask them how many vintages / AuM / IRR since inception.
