Private Debt Associate in London - Career Advice - I need help!

Hello,

This is my first post on this platform.

I am very concerned that I have pigeon-holed myself into a career path I do not want.

5.5 years ago I joined a small lower mid-market private credit fund in London (EBITDA  EUR 2-6m, ticket sizes are EUR 5-25m). I joined the firm, because the founder was a very senior guy at MS back in the day and I thought I would gain great experience. That turned out to be true to some extent, I have a good deal track record and I usually get staffed on the more complex situations, because the partners trust my judgement.

The problem is that I don't want to stay in lower mid-market private debt, because the type of deals overall do not excite me and the growth potential at my firm is fairly limited. I would like to move into special situations/distressed debt, but recruiters frequently tell me that I don't have the right background (the fact that I don't have a brand name on my CV might play a role as well).

You might ask yourself why I have stayed at this firm for a such a long time. The reason is I had some serious health issues to deal with over the past 2/3 years and I deprioritised my career planning as a result. I have sent many applications without much success and now I am asking myself whether I can put my career back on track.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some actionable steps and advice for transitioning from a lower mid-market private credit role to a special situations/distressed debt position:

  1. Leverage Your Current Experience:

    • Highlight your experience with complex situations and your strong deal track record. Emphasize the skills that are transferable to distressed debt and special situations, such as credit analysis, financial modeling, and deal structuring.
  2. Networking:

    • Networking is crucial. Attend industry events, join relevant professional groups, and connect with professionals in the distressed debt and special situations space. Building relationships can often open doors that are not accessible through traditional application processes.
  3. Targeted Applications:

    • Focus on firms that value diverse backgrounds and are open to candidates from non-traditional paths. Smaller or boutique firms might be more flexible in their hiring criteria compared to larger, brand-name institutions.
  4. Further Education and Certifications:

    • Consider pursuing additional certifications or courses that are relevant to distressed debt and special situations. This can help bridge any perceived gaps in your background and demonstrate your commitment to the field.
  5. Recruiter Relationships:

    • Work on building strong relationships with recruiters who specialize in the distressed debt and special situations market. They can provide valuable insights and may advocate for you if they understand your skills and potential.
  6. Health and Career Planning:

    • Given your past health issues, it's important to ensure that any new role aligns with your personal well-being. Look for firms that offer a supportive work environment and consider discussing your health history with potential employers if you feel comfortable.
  7. Consider a Lateral Move:

    • If moving directly into a distressed debt role is challenging, consider a lateral move to a larger private credit fund with a broader mandate. This can provide you with more exposure and potentially make the transition easier in the future.
  8. Persistence and Patience:

    • Career transitions can take time, especially when moving into a specialized field. Stay persistent with your applications and networking efforts, and be patient as you work towards your goal.
