Which credit certification is actually worth it for commercial banking in Canada?
Hi everyone,
I'm based in Toronto and looking to transition into commercial credit analysis, commercial lending or credit risk.
My background includes a diploma in International Business Management from Niagara College, a certificate from York University, previous banking experience at Bank of Africa, Canadian customer service and payment processing experience, and Microsoft Excel Associate certification. I'm also bilingual in French and English.
I'm considering investing in one of these programs:
- Commercial Credit Administration Program — Credit Institute of Canada
- Commercial Banking & Credit Analyst (CBCA) — Corporate Finance Institute
- Moody's Certificate in Commercial Credit — Canadian Securities Institute
The first program costs approximately $1,500, so I want to make sure the investment is worthwhile.
For those working in Canadian banks, commercial lending or credit risk, have you completed any of these certifications, or encountered them during recruitment?
Which one, if any, would carry the most weight when applying for entry-level commercial credit analyst or lending analyst positions?
Would you recommend one of these programs, or would practical financial statement analysis skills and relevant work experience be a better investment?
I'm particularly interested in firsthand experiences from people working in the Canadian financial industry.
Thanks!
