Advice Requested: Incoming Biotech ER Intern

Hi everyone,

I am a Junior and an incoming Biotech ER analyst at a MM firm. I come from a business/finance background and don't have STEM undergrad experience, which I was told was rare by the team that hired me. I'm taking classes in biopharmaceuticals next semester, and grinding through the Wall Street Prep courses for valuation technicals. I'm already pretty well versed with stock pitching having participated in competitions and through school business clubs (although I know this isn't in any way akin to the depth necessary as an ER analyst).

But what I am most worried about is my lack of knowledge about the science necessary to analyze and validate entities, clinical results, outcomes, etc. I know they are a few L2s who come from a non-biotech background but these appear to be simply exceptions to a "rule". Does anyone have any advice on how I can prepare?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some key recommendations to prepare for your role as a Biotech ER analyst:

  1. Understand Industry Trends and Clinical Processes:

    • Latest Trends: Stay updated with the latest trends in biotechnology and life sciences. Follow industry news, subscribe to relevant journals, and read reports from reputable sources.
    • Clinical Trial Processes: Learn about the different phases of clinical trials, from Phase I to Phase IV, and understand the regulatory environment governing these trials.
  2. Leverage Resources and Recommendations:

    • Informational Interviews: Conduct informational interviews with professionals currently working in healthcare IB or ER. This can provide insights into the practical aspects of the job and the industry.
    • Educational Resources: Utilize online courses, webinars, and workshops focused on biotechnology and pharmaceuticals. Platforms like Coursera, edX, and Khan Academy offer relevant courses.
  3. Develop Analytical Skills:

    • Primary Research: Hone your ability to conduct deep primary research by engaging with industry executives, physicians, and legal consultants.
    • Analytical Tools: Familiarize yourself with the tools and methodologies used in equity research, such as financial modeling, valuation techniques, and data analysis.
  4. Enhance Communication Skills:

    • Verbal and Written Communication: Strong communication skills are crucial. Practice explaining complex scientific concepts in simple terms, both verbally and in writing.
    • Networking: Build a network within the industry. Attend conferences, join professional associations, and participate in online forums like WSO to connect with peers and mentors.
  5. Prepare for Certifications:

    • Series Exams: Be prepared to obtain necessary certifications such as Series 7, 63, 86, and 87 if required by your firm.
  6. Utilize Your Background:

    • Finance Skills: Leverage your finance background to excel in stock pitching and valuation. Your business acumen can be a strong asset in analyzing the financial health and potential of biotech companies.

By focusing on these areas, you can bridge the gap between your finance background and the scientific knowledge required for biotech equity research. Good luck with your internship!
