Background Checks for SA 2026 London (FIR/ER Roles)

I’m going into my second year at a semi-target university in the UK and completed 3 spring weeks in IB at BBs and EBs, unfortunately I was not able to convert them into 2026 summers and so am recruiting this summer for Equity Research and Fixed Income Research summers. I have placed the spring weeks in the work experience section of my CV. I have no other work experience other than these. I understand that prior to starting a summer internship there is a relatively in depth background check. I was wondering how they would check spring week participation since it isn’t paid work experience and not really an internship. Would appreciate any insights on this!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, background checks for summer analyst roles, including Equity Research (ER) and Fixed Income Research (FIR), typically involve employment verification conducted by third-party companies. Here's how it works and how your spring weeks might be handled:

  1. Verification Process:

    • The third-party verification company will cross-check the information you provide in their portal with the details on your CV.
    • For paid work experiences, they often contact the employer directly or use official records to confirm your role, dates of employment, and responsibilities.
  2. Spring Week Participation:

    • Since spring weeks are not considered formal employment and are unpaid, they are less likely to be verified in the same way as a full internship or job.
    • However, the background check may still involve reaching out to the HR or recruitment teams of the banks where you completed the spring weeks to confirm your participation.
    • Ensure that the details you list on your CV (e.g., dates, program name, and responsibilities) match what the banks have on record.
  3. Tips for Smooth Verification:

    • Be honest and accurate about your spring week experiences. Avoid exaggerating responsibilities or misrepresenting the nature of the program.
    • If possible, keep any emails or documentation (e.g., offer letters, participation certificates) from the spring weeks as proof of your involvement. These can be helpful if any discrepancies arise during the background check.
  4. General Advice:

    • Since you’re targeting ER and FIR roles, focus on tailoring your CV to highlight relevant skills and experiences gained during the spring weeks, such as financial analysis, research, or teamwork.
    • If you’re concerned about the lack of other work experience, consider pursuing additional internships or part-time roles to strengthen your profile.

Good luck with your recruiting process!
