Biotech Equity Research Exit Opportunities in the South

Been in ER for 3+ years for biotech at a big bank, looking to move back home in the south. Any suggestions for exit opportunities, given biotech is really just east or west coast...? Or should I just start a different career?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some suggestions for exit opportunities in biotech equity research, even if you're looking to move back to the South:

  1. Healthcare Investment Banking:

    • Transitioning from equity research to healthcare investment banking can be a natural move. This role leverages your biotech expertise and can be found in various regions, including the South.
  2. Management Consulting:

    • Firms like McKinsey, BCG, and Bain have offices across the U.S., including the South. Your biotech background can be valuable in consulting roles focused on healthcare and life sciences.
  3. Corporate Strategy or Business Development:

    • Large pharmaceutical or biotech companies often have regional offices or subsidiaries. Roles in corporate strategy or business development can be a good fit.
  4. Venture Capital or Private Equity:

    • While many biotech-focused funds are on the coasts, there are generalist funds in the South that invest in healthcare and biotech. Look for opportunities in these firms.
  5. Academic or Research Institutions:

    • Universities and research institutions in the South may have roles in technology transfer, commercialization, or research management that align with your background.
  6. Startups and Smaller Biotech Firms:

    • The biotech startup scene is growing, and there may be emerging companies in the South looking for experienced professionals.

If none of these options seem appealing, you might consider exploring a different career path that still leverages your analytical and industry skills. Networking and informational interviews can also provide more personalized insights and opportunities.
