Friend of mine in B-School told me about this company Estimize. Been playing around with the figures and making estimates for the past couple months and have incorporated it into one of my sources for information when forming an investment thesis.
I can't help but think that a company like this (and if there's this one who's to say that there aren't dozens of others doing similar things for PE/HF/etc.) the LT case for an equity research analyst at an IB/botique is closing fast. If you can crowd source all the research and synthesize it into one common, easy to understand "dummy" guide then what does that mean for the research guys? Can this flow into / impact academia?

What do you guys think are the adavantages/ disadvantages?
Advantage: - Less biased analyst because 1. they are not scared to loose company/ management access if they are too strict on their evaluations 2. they don’t have to comply with the expectation to evaluate positively as underwriting banks have. This assumes that underwriting banks have the tendency to evaluate a client of their underwriting department more positively. - Broader sample (jar of marbles analogy)
Disadvantages: -Not as a close to the mgmt. as dedicated equity analysts - No quality assurance for permitted evaluating analysts
