Leverage Your Academic and Professional Background:
Your PhD in finance and accounting qualification are strong assets. Highlight these in your resume, emphasizing your analytical skills, financial expertise, and ability to conduct in-depth research. Your academic experience can also be positioned as a strength, showcasing your ability to analyze complex data and present findings clearly.
Address the Career Gap:
Since you spent three years traveling and doing gig work, be prepared to explain this gap positively. Frame it as a period of personal growth, adaptability, and gaining diverse perspectives, which can be valuable in understanding global markets.
Start Networking Aggressively:
Networking is critical in equity research. Reach out to professionals in the field, attend finance-related events in London, and connect with alumni or colleagues who might be in the industry. Use platforms like LinkedIn and industry forums to build relationships and seek informational interviews.
Develop Equity Research-Specific Skills:
Target Entry Points:
Be Persistent and Creative:
Equity research is competitive, so persistence is key. Tailor your applications to each firm, and don’t hesitate to showcase creative thinking or unique experiences that set you apart. For example, if you have expertise in a niche sector, position yourself as a specialist in that area.
Consider Related Roles:
If breaking directly into equity research proves challenging, consider roles in consulting, corporate finance, or even the buyside. These can serve as stepping stones to your ultimate goal.
Remember, the difference between successful candidates and others often comes down to tenacity and preparation. Keep refining your story, networking, and building your skill set. Good luck!
