Group Pivot Within ER?

I've got an ER offer for summer 2026 and currently looking at getting an internship for this summer. My freshman summer I worked in Real Estate Private Equity at a family office and haven't had any experience since. If I don't do something else this summer, or I do another real estate internship this summer, does that basically guarantee myself getting placed in REIT research or something similar?

It is the last sector I would want to cover, it's just that I am having a hard time finding an internship, and any interviewers I am getting are for real estate given my prior experience there. Any advice on this or how to find a different paid internship? I work unpaid last summer and can't do that again.

To avoid being pigeonholed into REIT research or real estate-focused roles in Equity Research (ER), it's crucial to diversify your experience this summer. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some actionable steps:

  1. Broaden Your Internship Search:

    • While your real estate experience is valuable, focus on applying to internships in other sectors or roles that align with your long-term interests in ER. Highlight transferable skills like financial modeling, market analysis, and valuation in your applications.
    • Consider boutique investment banks, corporate finance roles, or even internships in sectors like tech, healthcare, or consumer goods. These can provide exposure to industries outside of real estate.
  2. Leverage Networking:

    • Networking is often more effective than applying online. Reach out to alumni, professionals in your target sectors, or connections from your school. Use platforms like LinkedIn or your university's alumni network to set up informational interviews and express your interest in exploring other industries.
  3. Tailor Your Resume and Story:

    • When applying for non-real estate roles, emphasize the analytical and technical skills you developed in your REPE internship rather than the real estate-specific aspects. Frame your experience in a way that shows versatility and adaptability.
  4. Consider Paid Opportunities in Adjacent Fields:

    • If you're struggling to find a paid internship in your desired field, look into roles in adjacent areas like corporate strategy, consulting, or even startups. These can still provide valuable skills and help you pivot later.
  5. Prepare for Interviews:

    • Be ready to explain why you're looking to move away from real estate and into other sectors. A strong "why" story, backed by your interest in ER and the skills you've developed, will be key.
  6. Utilize Resources:

    • Platforms like WSO, your career center, and job boards can help you identify opportunities. Additionally, consider reaching out to recruiters who specialize in finance internships.

By taking these steps, you can position yourself for a broader range of opportunities and avoid being locked into a real estate-focused path in ER.
