GS GIR - ER Associate Interview Process

Hello folks,

Out of curiosity for those who managed to transition from IBD to ER, how was the interview process like?

I read a few threads about how other banks conducted their processes but not sure how to prepare for a technical interview. How intense can it get? Whether 400 Interview question prep book is still relevant.

Any tip you can offer is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, transitioning from IBD to ER (Equity Research) at GS or other banks typically involves a mix of technical and behavioral questions. Here’s what you should know:

  1. Technical Intensity: The technical portion can vary depending on the team and the interviewer. For ER, expect questions that test your understanding of valuation methodologies, financial modeling, and industry-specific knowledge. Be prepared to discuss how you would analyze a company, build a model, or interpret financial statements. The 400 Interview Question Prep Book is still relevant, especially for brushing up on technicals like DCF, WACC, and valuation techniques.

  2. Behavioral Questions: Similar to IBD interviews, behavioral questions will focus on your ability to work in a team, handle challenges, and demonstrate interest in ER. Questions like "Why ER?" or "Why GS?" are common. Be ready to articulate why you’re transitioning from IBD to ER and how your skills align with the role.

  3. Preparation Tips:

    • Know the Sector: If you’re interviewing for a specific sector, research it thoroughly. ER teams value candidates who can demonstrate genuine interest and knowledge in the industry they’ll cover.
    • Practice Stock Pitches: Be ready to pitch a stock, including your investment thesis, valuation, and key drivers. This is a common requirement in ER interviews.
    • Review Your Resume: Be prepared to discuss your IBD experience and how it translates to ER. Highlight transferable skills like financial analysis, client interaction, and attention to detail.
  4. Resources: Utilize guides like the WSO Investment Banking Interview Course and the 400 M&I question guide for technical prep. Additionally, practice mock interviews and stock pitches to refine your delivery.

If you already work in IB technicals IMO are relatively easier in ER. The issue becomes about your interest in public markets and understanding of fundamental drivers of stock price, and if you're in IB you don't really interact with the market as much. It isn't about your technical ability per-se as you probably have it and people will assume so because of your background, it is much more important to brush up on industry knowledge of the sector you're trying to cover and having a great stock pitch that's going to help you in the interview process.
