How did your boss handle you leaving?
Been in current role for a while, and am moving on to buyside after bonuses paid out in next few weeks. In my time in current role, more than doubled the size and scope of our franchise, so had a good working relationship and accomplished a lot as a team. Think my boss will be pretty chill about it when I have the leaving talk (but has a reputation of being "harsh" at times), but wondering what everyones experience has been? And how is your relationship now with your former boss?
Depends on where you exit - going to a sell-side competitor is likely not pretty, going to buyside / IR / corporate is relatively better.
Depends also on how long the analyst has been on the street. Oldies are more understanding and have seen people come and go. The rising stars feel everyone needs to grind it with them until a brand is built, without realizing the brand equity and monetary value of it accrue mostly to the analyst and not to the team, so he/she likely will feel offended that you are leaving the ship for whatever personal aspiration you have (but the reality is it has always been about everyone for themselves in a declining industry with such a long ramp to career progression).
How common is it for associates to jump ship to join other analysts covering the same industry/sector?
I can be wrong but joining a competing analyst's team is rarer than moving to buy-side, IR, corporate or other paths.
I think you’re wrong
I went to buyside and my senior analyst was supportive and even acted as a reference to the position.
Two years later I acted as a reference for a role he wanted.
Totally depends on your senior and whether they are short or long-term focused, as well as if the move is to sell or buy side. Sell side lateral is probably the worst chance to end well, sell side promotion may be ok, buy side should be best because you become a client.
