How to begin a summer of research

Hello monkeys.

Unfortunately I haven't been able to secure an internship for this summer. My goal is to get an offer in consulting by or after graduation so I know this is not a good look so far. I am waiting to hear if I get accepted in to a Top 5 Business schools summer program, but that would only take up 3 weeks of my summer. As a supplement I hope to dedicate my summer writing ER reports (presumably for Seeking Alpha).

I am not looking to be an ER analyst but I am not completely turned off by the subject and I think some valuable and transferable skills can be gained from this. In order to get myself familiar with the technicals I have a copy of the Intelligent Investor I'm starting to decipher and am looking to purchase an ER textbook. Some article ideas I have in mind to get me started would be thoughts and predictions on Alibaba Pre IPO and a valuation of Tesla.

Other than this I really dont have specific guidelines or a plan as to how I will go about this, so I am throwing myself to the sharks in order to gain some insight as to how I can go about this, or even ideas on any better things I can do with my summer. Thank you!

also interested in this. In a similar situation as you. I would check out the Interpretation of Financial Statements by Mary Buffett, and there are good book suggestions in an old BlackHat and Simple As post.

I'm jumping into doing research on companies by going through 10-k's and trying to come up with investment ideas/learn about different industries but would love to hear what others have done to be productive over the summer.
