Is it pesky to email ER contacts when they're quoted in a major newspaper? Or is it an appropriate touchpoint?

An equity research contact of mine was quoted in a major paper, think NYT/WSJ/WaPo (tho just in the online edition). Is it appropriate to send him a quick email note referencing it? I know aspiring IBDs send their contacts congratulatory emails when they have a major deal close, and I figured that this might be a comparable situation. What do you all think? If you got an email like this from a mentee, would you be flattered/impressed? Lastly, any recommendations on how to best phrase it? thanks!

Edit: As context, he isn't an analyst that is referenced on a weekly basis in major papers. He probably is mentioned a few times a year.

Don’t see any issue with you telling him that you saw his piece in fact I think it’s good because it shows that you’re following his work in someway.

Something a long the lines of I saw your quote in XXX and thought it was insightful/great. Would also ask a quick question with something relating to the company or industry that shows you have some understanding. It also shows that you’re following the industry, the analyst, and you’re taking initiative to reach out. Would keep it very short though to make sure he reads and responds
